The 111-acre park features 16 caves, with a combination of standalone caverns and connected systems. You’ll discover them all as you hike farther and farther along the trails.

The park is very well marked and maintained, but hiking shoes are recommended, and many people find trekking poles to be helpful, too.

The most famous of the caves is Upper Dancehall Cave. You’ll be following a staircase right into the mouth of this enormous natural wonder.

It’s hard to imagine the sheer size of these water-carved wonders until you’re standing next to them. Dancehall Cave itself descends more than 100 feet to reveal a breathtaking sight.

Don’t leave the park without finding the natural bridge, an impressive rock formation that straddles Raccoon Creek.

If you want to plan an efficient and quick way to hike Maquoketa Caves State Park, plan to tackle the Ridge Trail. This one pathway is just 1.7 miles long, but it shows off half of the park’s caves. You’ll see Wide Mouth Cave, Dugout Cave, Twin Arch Cave, Hernando’s Hideaway, Up N Down Cave, Window Cave, and Match Cave, all on your way to the most famous formation – Dancehall Cave.
