Tennessee is all sorts of stunning and wonderful, but, unfortunately, no place is absolutely perfect. Even this gorgeous place has a couple of rough spots that may twinge a bit more than others late at night. Based on stats from our friends at RoadSnacks, we’ve found seven dangerous towns that will have you locking your doors. Which is a safe practice anyway….? So we’re going to say that you aren’t at a loss. Don’t write these little towns off too quickly, though! You just might miss a gem that is best visited during the day. Which small towns in Tennessee do you think should be on the list?

  1. Memphis

Thomas R. Matchnizki / Wikipedia Aw, buddy. You’re the belle of the ball - but it’s the wrong occassion. Memphis has the highest crime rate and has been rated as one of the most dangerous cities in Tennessee. Even if the crime rate might be a bit rough, there is a lot of wonderful things to do and see here and it’s an absolute doozy of a place. Memphis, TN, USA

  1. Dyersburg

Paul Sableman/Flickr Ah, Dyersburg. The Gateway to Everywhere. Unfortunately, also one of the most dangerous places in Tennessee after dark, with 1,275 violent crimes per 100,000 people and 6,797 property crimes per 100,000 people. Oof. Dyersburg, TN 38024, USA

  1. Chattanooga

Klobetime/Flickr Chattanooga consistently ranks among the highest crime rates in Tennessee, and it’s movin’ on up: its position last year was #5. Chattanooga, TN, USA

  1. Newport

cmh2315fl/Flickr We’re in love with the downtown, but not the crime rate. In 2020, residents had a 1 in 20 chance of their property being stolen or vandalized, averaging about one car theft per week. Newport, TN 37821, USA

  1. Covington

Brent Moore/Flickr Covington is a western Tennessee town that has some struggles when it comes to both violent and property crime. In 2020, there were 130 violent crimes in Covington, as well as 451 property crimes. Covington, TN, USA

  1. Athens

J. Stephen Conn/Flickr Athens actually ranks as the least violent town on this list (yay!) - there wasn’t even one murder here in 2020, but residents still had a 1 in 17 chance of being the victim of a property crime. Athens, TN 37303, USA

  1. Savannah

Brent Moore/Flickr Sweet little Savannah is a historical gold mine and has a darling main street to boot. But crime-wise? It’s got the tenth highest rate of violent crime in the entire state. Savannah, TN 38372, USA

Most Dangerous Towns in Tennessee August 02, 2022 Tori Jane What are some of the most dangerous towns in Tennessee?   Tennessee is a beautiful little state, but it’s not without its riskier cities and towns. Unfortunately, everywhere you go has got some places that maybe you shouldn’t visit at night, including our beautiful state. Some of the most dangerous towns in Tennessee at the time of this writing include Memphis, which, as a big city, is unsurprising. In 2021, it was deemed the single most dangerous city in the United States. It’s got the second-highest murder rate in the country, and honestly, you just don’t want to be caught there alone after sunset. The other is, of course, Nashville – another big city in Tennessee with an abnormally high violent crime rate.   What are some of the dangers of living in Tennessee?   The natural world in Tennessee isn’t a slouch of any kind. It’s incredibly scenic – one of the most beautiful places in the United States – and it’s home to so many amazing natural landscapes, historic towns, and more. But, like anywhere else, it’s not without its risks; some of the dangers of living in Tennessee include natural disasters like tornadoes, which, for whatever reason, seem to be just a little deadlier in Dixie Alley – which is where Tennessee is. Flooding is another significant issue, and the humidity combined with the heat is a killer every year.   Where are some dangerous places to avoid in Tennessee?  The big cities aren’t the only places you’ll want to avoid at night; there are also some smaller towns that are dangerous and definitely make the list as dangerous places to avoid in Tennessee at night. Savannah, Tennessee, has a crime rate that’s high when compared to its population (though it’s significantly safer than either of the two cities in the paragraph above). Newport doesn’t have that high a violent crime rate at first glance – until you factor in its low population. Suddenly, it then becomes of the most dangerous towns in Tennessee.
