Turn on the local news and, most days, the lead story has to do with crime. While Pittsburgh has repeatedly been named one of the nation’s most livable cities, it has its problems, including some areas in which Pittsburghers must be extra vigilant, especially after the sun sets. The following 10 most dangerous places in Pittsburgh are based on 2014 crime data, the most recent year available, released by the City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Safety.
The following list was complied based on violent and non-violent crimes and the city’s report cites the population as of the 2010 census. Violent crimes, which include both personal and property crimes, encompass homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson.
- North Shore

Statistics found that there were 139.6 crimes for every 100 residents in 2014. The total number of crimes tallied 423, with 112 falling under the category of violent, such as one rape, six robberies, and seven aggravated assaults.
- Strip District

That means there were 54.87 crimes for every 100 residents of the Strip District. Of the 338 total crimes, 141 were violent and included one murder, one rape, nine aggravated assaults, and 103 thefts.
- Central Business District
Flickr/Wally Gobetz The Central Business District, with a population of 3,629, averaged 48.03 crimes for every 100 citizens in 2014. The neighborhood had a total of 1,743 crimes, nearly half of them violent. Violent crimes included 73 robberies and 64 aggravated assaults.
- West End

- East Allegheny
Flickr/David Kent East Allegheny’s population of 2,136 experienced 33.52 crimes for every 100 residents in 2014. The total number of crimes in East Allegheny came to 716 with one rape, one homicide, 25 robberies, and 33 aggravated assaults. Thefts totaled 142.
- Allegheny Center
Flickr/iris The 2010 census reports that Allegheny Center had 933 residents. The number of crimes reported in 2014 totaled 304, which comes to 32.58 crimes for every 100 residents. Allegheny Center had one rape, 13 robberies, and nine aggravated assaults.
- South Side Flats
Flickr/Ben Schulman Approximately 6,597 people call the South Side Flats home. The neighborhood experienced 1,955 crimes in 2014, which equates to 29.63 crimes for every 100 people. Violent crimes included 43 robberies, 51 aggravated assaults, and 516 thefts.
- Arlington Heights
Google Maps The small neighborhood of Arlington Heights, population 244, saw 67 crimes in 2014, 27.46 crimes for every 100 residents. Violent crimes included one robbery and nine aggravated assaults.
- Homewood South
Google Maps Homewood South’s 2,344 residents experienced a total of 605 crimes in 2014 or 25.81 crimes for every 100 residents. Violent crimes included seven homicides, two rapes, 29 robberies, and 50 aggravated assaults.
- Homewood West
