Living in Maine means soaking up all things Vacationland. It means knowing where the best and cheapest lobster can be bought. And it means knowing that some of the best moments in life are had when surrounded by friends and family doing pretty much nothing. Living in Maine also means a life full of tradition. Here are some of the most interesting traditions from Maine that you might recognize. Have others to add? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Enjoying Sunday dinner with the family.

Pikakoko / Flickr This might actually be a British thing, but wherever it originated from, we’re happy to have it! We also have some weird foods here that no one else does.

  1. Complaining about everything related to driving beginning with the first day of Spring.

Doug Kerr / Flickr After a winter full of ice and snow, those potholes and road construction are nothing to joke about! Especially if you’ve got somewhere to be.

  1. Finding as many hearts on Valentine’s Day in Portland.

Corey Templeton / Flickr And then trying to figure out who the Valentine’s Day Bandit really is!

  1. Wearing pajamas inside out while wishing for snow.

Emergency Brake / Flickr Snow days in Maine can be few and hard to come by, but kids who grew up here might remember wearing their pajamas inside out. Rumor has it that this can lead to snow and a day off from school!

  1. Celebrating the opening day of hunting season.

Jennifer / Flickr If that day happens to fall on a school day, better hope someone else can give you the homework!

  1. Picking Maine wild blueberries on a summer’s day hike.

julia h. / Flickr Bonus points if you know to bring plastic containers so that the blueberries don’t get crushed on the way back!

  1. Or, leaving the hard work to the professionals and hitting a you-pick spot as soon as the season is right.

Tom Lin / Flickr Skip the hike, grab the kids and come back with guaranteed finds. Wanna find some blueberries then check out the Libby & Sons U-Pick.

  1. Cheering (even if it’s silently in your head) when you cross the Piscataqua River Bridge back into Maine.

oliver gartmann / Flickr The air smells different as soon as you hit that border into Kittery!

  1. Getting pier fries at Palace Playland in the summer.

H. Michael Miley / Flickr Then feeling a little bit sick on the rides! I mean let’s be honest a beachfront theme park is pretty cool right? Palace Playland will always hold a special place in our hearts.

  1. The excitement before a pit party.

Santa Dog / Flickr Who’s going to be there?! Note: That’s a silly question. Everyone is.

  1. Attending a Bean Supper at the local Grange.

Melissa / Flickr Or, if you’re a kid, staying up late knowing that your mom is going to come home with tales of things you’ve done at school!

  1. Heading to Reny’s multiple times before the first day of school.

smilla4 / Flickr You never know what they might add to the shelves before the big day!

  1. Smeltin'!

Paul VanDerWerf / Flickr Ice fishing in Maine isn’t only about the fish. It’s about getting together with your friends and enjoying a perfect day in Maine.

  1. Heading upta camp in the summer.

Martha / Flickr It’s definitely not a lake house!

  1. Reuniting with your lifelong pals in Maine no matter how much time has passed.

Paul VanDerWerf / Flickr There’s nothing like it and you’ll be doing it all your life.

Those are the traditions from Maine that we remember growing up with. What other kinds of traditions did you have?

traditions in Maine August 11, 2022 Chris Dodge What are some other Maine Traditions? We have a long history in Maine and with that comes some strange traditions or just interesting things we do without even thinking about them. Here are a couple more for you. When the weather starts to warm up we can finally go outside again and we will set up our lawn chairs and just soak in the sun. it may only be 60 degrees but it feels nice to feel the sun after five or six months of not having it. We have red hotdogs that snap when you bite them and we call them red snappers. We eat other funny things that no one else seems to. We however have a rugged sense of ownership of our land and we are proud of it. We have days to celebrate our towns, and we have festivals to celebrate our Maine way of life. Sometimes you just have to laugh at the things we do, and know that many times other people just don’t live as we do.  What kind of things make up the culture of Maine? Maine has more to offer than just lumberjacks and fishermen, but those are both pretty cool things all by themselves. We have also contributed new innovative inventions to our world and we have made some wonderful advancements for society. We do love our small coastal towns, and we pride ourselves on places like Acadia. Especially places that are as beautiful as Jordan Pond. We love our woods and we love going to unique places like the Viles Arboretum.
