Did you know that there are more than 17 million acres of forest land in Minnesota? In fact, more than 34% of the state is covered in woods! Because of this, there are plenty of exciting attractions hidden in the woods that you may not be aware of. One of our favorites is a mystical monolith hidden deep in the woods of northern Minnesota. If you’re looking for a unique nature trek, it does not get any more interesting than this. Take a look:

Magnetic Rock Trail is a beautiful trail in northern Minnesota. It’s about 45 miles north of Grand Marais, not far from the Canadian border. You can access the trailhead from the Gunflint Trail.

The trail is short, crossing about 3 miles of northern Minnesota forest. The trail is unpaved, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes!

As you hike, look closely around you. You’ll be able to spot interesting wildflowers, mushrooms, and maybe even wildlife.

You’ll also see evidence of past events in the area. For example, you can still see the results of a 1999 wildfire, a 2002 intentional burn, and a 2007 wildfire.

Hike for a while, and you’ll soon be able to see the top of a tall rock poking above the trees.

The rock stands 60 feet tall, rising higher than any other rock you’ll find in the area. It was likely left behind by receding glaciers.

But that’s not all that makes this monolith interesting. It’s also magnetic! Bring a compass when you visit, and try holding it near the rock. The pointer will move!

This rock looks unlike anything else in the surrounding area. This, combined with its magnetic properties, makes it seem mystical. Plan a trip to see this unique geological wonder!
