Founded as a mining town when European settlers arrived in the 1850s, Julian is an official California Historical Landmark. One thing you have to do while you’re here is really experience the town’s mining history. Julian Mining Company is one destination that hosts gold panning and gem sluicing - just like they did in the old days! You can also tour two of Julian’s original gold mines at The Eagle Mining Co.

Julian Mining Company doubles as a farm and orchard. During the fall season, they offer u-pick corn, pumpkins, and gourds. They also host apple cider pressing, hayrides, and more fall-themed fun.

Orchards and agriculture are abundant in Julian! If you’re looking for fresh produce, you won’t be disappointed. Ranchita del Reo is an apple orchard that offers apple picking (by appointment) seasonally from September through November. Established in the 1940s, apple picking at this orchard is a fall tradition that never gets old.

Be sure to stop at Julian Cider Mill during your visit. This specialty grocery store has operated for over 30 years and is especially beloved for its raw, all-natural apple cider. Hand-pressed from local apples, a sip of this cider is worth the trip to Julian alone!

Honestly, one day just won’t be enough to see all that Julian has to offer. If you decide to stay the night, you can’t do better than the Julian Gold Rush Hotel - an 1890s National Historic Landmark. Are you ready to visit the mountain town of Julian?

Fall in southern California August 18, 2022 Courtnie Erickson What are some of the best things to do in the fall in Southern California? There are so many incredible things to do during the fall months in Southern California. One of our favorite activities is to go leaf-peeping and there are beautiful lakeside and mountain destinations around this area of the state that are absolutely perfect! One destination that we highly recommend is Green Valley Lake. Located in the San Bernardino Mountains, this area becomes absolutely stunning during the fall season. You can enjoy a long day trip or even a weekend getaway to this lake for the ultimate fall retreat. Wrightwood is another destination that absolutely comes alive during the fall months in Southern California. When the fall foliage is at its peak, this entire town is surrounded by the most vibrant colors and it is breathtakingly beautiful. When visiting, give yourself plenty of time to roam the streets and visit the many shops and eateries along the way. Of course, many of the state parks in Southern California transform during the autumn and you’ll enjoy the most vibrant red, yellow, and orange leaves. During your visit to these state parks, you can hike, fish, and boat. You may even want to camp and disconnect for a few days. Are there any road trips I should take during the fall in Southern California? Yes! There are so many different trip options that you’ll never want to stay at home. One road trip that we highly recommend is a simple two-hour drive that takes you from Wrightwood to Big Bear Lake. This is one of our favorite drives for viewing fall foliage and you’ll also drive through charming historic towns in Southern California as well. It’s the perfect fall day adventure!
