Deciding which trail to follow, however, can be a bit challenging, especially with all of the scenic treks in all corners of the state. Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park in Missouri is an idyllic backdrop for a day of exploring – from hiking its picturesque trails to cooling off in the shut-ins during the hottest days of summer.

However, after that, be prepared to for a decent workout. The trail features some steep climbs and rocky terrain. It can also be quite slippery after rain and in the fall when the leaves scatter across the ground.

If you’re up for the challenge, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of the shut-ins and the surrounding landscape. For an easier journey, hikers recommend doing the trail counterclockwise.

Follow up your trek with an easy journey along the Scour Trail. Be sure to wear water shoes or shoes you don’t mind getting wet as you will have a few water crossings.
