Do you love a little bit of haunted content while you visit a new place? If you’ve been searching for the perfect historic town that also happens to have a haunted restaurant, then look no further than Old Mesilla. From the history of the land to the buildings built upon it, the effect is palpable. That is… if you are in tune with the supernatural. Will this be more than just a history visit for you?
Welcome to Mesilla, a small town that was once a major stop between San Diego and San Antonio. For all of those traveling through the area, Mesilla was the place to pause, and as such, has a lot of history attached. History that may or may not be a little haunted. That all depends on whether you believe the stories.

Historic buildings like the Sal Albino Basilica stand tall during the day, but at night, can have an eerie air to them. You wouldn’t expect that a beautiful church to look so imposing at night, but it’s amazing what shadows can change as you walk through the town at different times of the day.

Even Billy the Kid, Mesilla’s most notorious resident, was sentenced to death at the county courthouse. However, as historic as the town is as a whole, you’ll find that there is one specific spot that seems a bit more spooky than the rest.

The Double Eagle Restaurant, home to beautiful decor and delicious dishes, is not only the number one steakhouse in New Mexico, but possibly also the number one haunted steakhouse as well. After all, a knife is involved in both your dinner and someone’s demise.

Ghosts have been witnessed and photographed here, and for good reason! In 1849, aristocrats lived on the plaza here, and one particular story of love and death haunts the grounds. The stunning decor, like the paintings and Baccarat crystal chandeliers, feels a little different once you’ve heard the tale of a mother doing whatever it takes to ensure her son’s successful future.

As the story goes, a Spanish maid named Inez was murdered by the mother of her secret lover, Armando. To her, status was more important than love. Some versions of the tale allude that during the attack, Armando threw himself over Inez, and took one of the stabs meant for his beloved, thus ending his life. The Carlotta Room, where it happened, has a reputation for strange cold spots and the sound of laughter, depending on the mood of the night. The ghosts of both of them have been spotted in the area along with scents of a woman’s perfume when no one is around. Spooky!

Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, there is something to be said about the energy someone leaves behind after living in a place for a long time. If Old Mesilla is old news for you, then maybe you’ll be entertained by a bigger source of spooky news, like one of New Mexico’s most haunted towns, instead.
