Everyone loves a good second chance story, and one place that embodies that perfectly is Brownstone Adventure Sports Park. This spot is now a beloved summer water park in Connecticut featuring warm-weather attractions that are a delight for the whole family. But it wasn’t so long ago that this was a quarry! The history of this water park is really fascinating. Check it out:

The Portland Quarries were once among the most productive sources of brownstone in the country. The brownstone was used in many buildings throughout major cities: New York City is famous for its brownstone apartments.

Wikimedia Commons Quarrying went on in the area from 1690 onward. Flooding in the 1930s flooded the entire quarry. It’s thought that the flooding opened up underground springs, because all the efforts to drain the quarry have failed.

The flooding seems like it should have been a disaster for the area: after all, it was no longer usable for its primary purpose. However, the land has creatively been turned into a water park that’s the perfect summer destination in Connecticut!
