Eisenhower Park On Long Island Is A Great Place For Families

Eisenhower Park is Nassau County’s biggest park and it’s a great place for families to visit at any time of year. At 930 acres, it is even bigger than New York City’s Central Park. It’s located in the center of the county and it’s bordered by Westbury to the north and East Meadow to the south.

There are dozens of things to do in this park. You and your family can have a completely different experience every time you visit. Eisenhower Park has been a part of the Nassau County park system since 1944. Much of the land that makes up this large park was once part of the Salisbury Country Club. During the Great Depression, the club’s owners weren’t able to pay the taxes on the property so the county took it over.

Mohamed Rafi/Google Local After buying additional adjacent parcels, the park was created as Salisbury Park. The name was changed to Eisenhower Park in 1969 soon after the former president’s passing at age 79 earlier that year.

A great first stop in this park is at one or both of the park’s two miniature golf courses. These courses are beautifully landscaped and include water features and challenging holes.

There are also batting cages near the miniature golf courses but further, there are lots of other sports facilities and fields. The park has 14 softball fields, three baseball fields, three football fields, four soccer fields, and 16 lighted tennis courts.

You and your family will love walking or riding bikes on the park’s trails, especially around Salisbury Lake.

The Nassau County Aquatic Center is one of the best swimming facilities in the entire country. It was built for the 1998 Goodwill Games. It’s open to the public daily.

Northwell Health Ice Center an ice rink that is open to the public as well. It’s also the practice facility for the New York Islanders.

There are also several playgrounds on the property. You could go to a different one almost every day of the week.

One of the playgrounds is a designated “Let All the Children Play” playground that is universally accessible. It’s on two acres and has accessible playground equipment in two age-appropriate sections, one for ages 0-5 and one for ages 5-12.

The Nassau County Veteran’s Memorial is also in Eisenhower Park. It’s quite impressive. You can also visit the Firefighter’s Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, and the Nassau County 9/11 Memorial.

At the end of the day, maybe you can catch a live performance or a movie at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theater. It’s a special and attractive venue with a comfortable, grassy green lawn.
