As its name suggests, Double Springs was named after two springs that flowed side by side. During the 1940s, State Highway 195 was built, and it now covers the pair of springs. The hidden springs still flow underneath the highway.

Another popular nearby attraction is the Houston Historic Jail. Located in Houston, Alabama, this jail, which is believed to have been built in 1868, is the only known log jail in Alabama that’s still standing today. It’s also one of the few surviving log jails in the United States. An interesting fact about Houston, Alabama is that it was the original seat of Winston County before Double Springs became the county seat in 1884.
