Wisconsin has thousands of beautiful lakes and countless soft sand beaches, but there are a few special spots that are simply magical. In far northern Wisconsin, one little beach has soft sand that slopes gently into the clearest water you’ve ever seen. It’s appropriately named Crystal Lake and it’s a Wisconsin beach you won’t forget. Here’s why.
Crystal Lake is located in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, the largest state-owned forest in Wisconsin. The forest stretches across three counties and includes scores of lakes, rivers, streams, and ponds.

One of the most beautiful lakes in this forest is Crystal Lake. It’s a short drive from the nearby community of Sayner, and when you arrive at the lake’s shore you might think you’re in paradise.

Spanning 93 acres, Crystal Lake is by no means huge; however, at 67 feet deep, it is relatively deep for its size.

There’s no river or stream flowing into or out of the lake. It’s a kettle hole lake, formed by glacial melting thousands of years ago.

As such, the lake’s water is incredibly clear. Its water has been compared to the likes of famous, faraway lakes like Lake Tahoe in California and Crater Lake in Oregon.

There are public beach areas on both sides of the lake. When you’re relaxing on the soft sand, staring at the incredibly clear water, you’ll want your time here to last forever.

There’s a visitor center and campground near the beach, as well as miles of trails to explore.
