Climbing stairs isn’t most people’s idea of a good time, but a natural rock staircase that leads up a mountain? That’s an entirely different story. You’ll find one such staircase on the Devil’s Hall Trail in Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and although it’s a difficult hike, the destination is well worth the journey.

The Pine Springs Trailhead in Texas’ Guadalupe Mountains National Park gives hikers four different options - today, we’re embarking on the Devil’s Hall Trail.

While the trail is only 3.6 miles long, it’s a challenging and highly technical route. For this reason, only experienced hikers should embark on it.

For the first mile or so, the trail is relatively flat, but it quickly gains elevation from there. You’ll climb a total of 548 feet, much of which is concentrated around a rocky wash that leads to an impressive natural staircase.

Scaling the wash does require a fair amount of scrambling over boulders and other debris, so you may want to consider bringing along some gear. The experience of ascending stairsteps created entirely by Mother Nature, however, is worth any amount of effort.

At the base of the wash, a pristine natural pool features jaw-dropping reflections of the surrounding landscape.

The trail’s namesake is a “hallway” of sorts formed by towering canyon walls on either side. You’ll feel awestruck as you hike through ancient history and reflect on how this incredible place came to be.
