Some things you do for money, some things you do for love…and some things you do because it’s fun to do dumb stuff. That’s the idea behind a new event happening in May of 2022. The winner can take home up to $5000, so read on to find out all about this goofy championship.
Ah, avocados. Those bumpy green fruits used to just sit in a dark corner of the produce department, waiting hopefully for someone to get a craving for homemade guacamole.

But these days, they’re being touted as one of the healthiest whole foods you can buy. Now they’re taking on a new life as Nebraska holds its first-ever National Avocado Launching Championship.

The competition will take place in North Platte on May 21st. And if you’re wondering what, exactly, an avocado launching championship is, the answer is pretty simple.
National Avocado Launching Championship
It’s just what it sounds like: a contest to see which team can launch their avocado the farthest. Teams of three will work together to create some kind of human-powered launching device to shoot the big green berries (yes, they’re berries, we checked) toward targets.

The targets, made of upturned stock tanks, have scoring zones. Each team is awarded points based on the spot their avocado hits.

Even Buffalo Bill is getting in on the avocado-launching fun! If you’d like to register, you’d better assemble a team fast – the registration deadline is May 1st. All competitors must be at least 18 and there is a fee to register. Most importantly, no outside avocados are allowed.

For those of us who aren’t looking to compete, we can look forward to watching as dozens of avocados sail through the air at Wild West Arena. We hope the National Avocado Launching Championship becomes a beloved Nebraska tradition.
