Do you like archeological mysteries? Want to try to uncover the historical significance of fascinating discoveries? Then head to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to check out these interesting rock circles, which are still being explored and studied by archaeologists today. It’s one of the most intriguing archaeological sites in Southern California.
Some of the circles have been here for over 3,000 years, so you’ll really be able to feel connected to the past when you’re looking at these earthworks.
Eric Liang/AllTrails The landscape has, of course, changed over the years, meaning that the raised nature of some of the rock circles could be due to different natural features, including water-based ones like lakes or rivers. Archaeologists are still exploring the purpose behind the circles, and have not yet found a specific one. They may have been used for spiritual purposes, cooking, or a combination.
The wide-open desert spaces also feature thousands of other archaeological discoveries. In fact, over 45,000 other historical sites are located in this famous state park.
