Sometimes hikes are a little more difficult than they appear, and taking the kids on an adventure becomes a struggle to plan. The family-friendly Fontainebleau Nature Trail trail in Mississippi is for all ages to enjoy! Easy-peasy hiking without losing any scenery is the ideal way to have an adventure outdoors.

There’s a certain stunning area around Ocean Springs named Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge. Out here, the landscape is beautiful with or without the migrating birds who call it home.

Fontainebleau Nature Trail is a stunning half-hour adventure that takes you through a mile of easy loop trail. However, there is the option to add on the attached Forest Trail halfway through the loop, if you have enough energy to burn. For older, energetic kids, that extra bit of trail can be really useful.

The refuge here is the premier spot for sandhill cranes and other migratory birds to collectively hang out. Migratory waterfowl are a big part of the ecosystems here, and Mississippi sandhill cranes are a critically endangered species that needs support. Thankfully, respectful visitors and generous supporters of the refuge help keep them going.

Enjoying the savannas, wetlands, bogs, and even groves around the park is always a great adventure, especially if you have time to stop by the nature center afterward for more educational content. Who wouldn’t want to learn more about the conservation of such beautiful ecosystems?

Though some hikers venture out here for migratory bird season, others enjoy wildlife spotting, plant learning, and just enjoying a nature walk. After all, sometimes all you need is to relax for a while, and breathe the clean air around you. Though no one would ever recommend you visit after heavy rain, the trails are harder to hike if it is too wet or hot, especially with kids in tow.

However, you like to enjoy a good hike with the family, make sure you leave nothing behind but footprints and take nothing with you except what you brought out. Clean trails make for happy hikers!

Of course, Mississippi is full of hikes at all difficulty levels. If you need a boardwalk path to smooth things over, hike at the Marshwalk Pier for easy access to beautiful scenery. Who doesn’t love a good marsh?
