Step back in time to the world of speakeasies with a visit to The Gallows Bar in Mississippi, a basement-based eatery nestled in one of the state’s oldest buildings. And just like a genuine speakeasy, it’s somewhat hidden, which means you have to know where to look for it.

The Gallows Bar is hidden in the basement of the Wierhouse, a century-old building right on the square in Brandon.

Estimated to be the oldest building in Rankin County, the historic structure dates back to the 1800s and has served as everything from a jail to a hardware store.

And though it’s been beautifully restored, the building still retains many of its original features, such as hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, and high ceilings.

In 2018, the building began its new life as the Wierhouse, which, in addition to The Gallows Bar, houses loft apartments, a bakery, and restaurant, Genna Benna’s.

The Gallows Bar is actually an extension of Genna Benna’s and occupies the basement beneath the restaurant.

Between the obscure locale, dimly lit setting, comfy seating, and stocked bar, it’s just like an old-timey speakeasy.

The beverage selection is sure to be a bit more extensive than those found at the speakeasies of yesteryear, though.

In addition to craft beer and wine, The Gallows Bar doles out creative, prohibition-style cocktails, tiki drinks, and tapas.

Just as much of a must-visit as The Gallows Bar, Genna Benna’s serves a varied fare that includes everything from shrimp and grits to juicy steaks.

This isn’t the state’s only historic underground restaurant. There’s also the Julep Room in Ocean Springs. During its heyday, the underground lounge was no stranger to celebrities, including Billie Holiday and Elvis Presley.
