Most Montanans have a great sense of humor and can laugh at the Montana stereotypes they hear. But at some point, it stops being funny and starts getting ridiculous. So, let’s put a few things to rest once and for all, and then the rest of the country can keep making jokes while we go back to enjoying life in paradise.
- Everyone is a cowboy or a cowgirl.
matthewcammann/Flickr Yes, we have cowboys and cowgirls here and we love them. We also have people in Montana who have never set foot on a ranch and don’t care for country music. We love them all the same.
- Everyone owns a gun.
NechakoRiver/Flickr Montana has some of the least restrictive gun laws in the country and it’s home to many hunters. But we also believe in freedom, and if you choose not to own guns, that’s perfectly fine.
- The people are uneducated rednecks and out of touch with reality.
Jimmy Emerson, DVM/Flickr We have several amazing universities that produce some of the country’s smartest citizens. Also, we’re a swing state, so we tend to pay attention to political issues. You’ll find all kinds of people everywhere and Montana is no exception.
- If you grow up in Montana, you know how to kill a bear with your bare hands.
Lauren Elyse Lynskey/Flickr This is not something they teach in school — or anywhere.
- Everyone owns horses.
Howard Hecht/Flickr Wouldn’t it be magical if all Montanans were gifted a horse when they turned 18? We hate to break it to you, but this one isn’t true either. It is fun though to use your imagination.
- There isn’t much good food or good coffee in Montana.
Firetower Coffee House/Yelp This might be the least accurate one of all. Have a latte at Firetower Coffee House in Helena and you’ll get a small taste of what Montana has to offer.
- Everyone owns a truck.
Wesley Fryer/Flickr Not so much. In fact, we really love our cars here as well.
- Everyone in Montana is a total badass.
Montana Memes Facebook OK … there might be a little bit of truth to this one.
It’s fun to make jokes. Just make sure they don’t get out of hand, or you could wind up sounding as silly as this person.

While there are certainly some things that out-of-state visitors think when they come to visit us, we don’t care. In fact, we have a whole list of attractions that we Montanans like to keep to ourselves.
