It’s easy to tell when someone isn’t from New Jersey – there are plenty of tell-tale signs! We’re a particular bunch, and New Jerseyans have a few distinctive habits. Here are a few of the easiest ways to spot an imposter in the Garden State.
- Their ice cream order includes sprinkles.

- They have no opinion on “central Jersey”.

- They’re confused when you ask if they want to take a boost!

- They’re perfectly capable of pumping their own gas.

- They’ve got “fireflies” in their yard.
Flickr / Fred Huang Have you ever noticed that most of the country calls lightning bugs by the wrong name?
- They’re “midwest nice”.
Flickr / Chris Don’t get me wrong - if you’ve got a flat tire, a New Jerseyan is going to stop to help you, but they’ll make you feel like you really should have known what to do, anyway. While we’re plenty nice here, nobody’s going out of their way for pleasantries.
- They think the night before Halloween isn’t a big deal.

What are some other signs that someone is an imposter in New Jersey? If you moved here, were you surprised by how stubbornly the Garden State holds on to culture and traditions? We’d love to hear all about your experiences in the comments, below!
