If you have ever driven through Kansas, there is a pretty good chance that you have driven past and/or through an Amish community. Kansas is home to several different communities and each is as charming and delightful as the last. Take a look at the five following Amish communities in Kansas that are sure to give you a newfound appreciation for the simpler things in life.
- Yoder
Flickr/Lisa BC Founded in the late 1800s, Yoder is considered to be the largest Amish settlement in Kansas. Unlike most Amish communities, Yoder is progressive in technology when it comes to working the fields (they allow bulk milk tanks, rototillers, and tractors) and in transportation methods (you will see a healthy mix of both horse and buggy AND cars and trucks.) During your visit to this Kansas Amish community, make sure to stop by and enjoy a meal in town. You won’t regret it! Yoder, KS 67543, USA
- Hutchinson
Flickr/Loco Steve Located just north of Yoder is an Amish settlement in the southeast corner of Hutchinson (a modern-day town with a population of 40,000.) The area is home to two Amish-made furniture stores, as well as two church districts. Hutchinson, KS, USA
- Garnett
Flickr/Carl Wycoff Located 50 miles south of Lawrence is the Garnett Amish settlement. In addition to farms and churches, the town is home to small carpentry, cabinet making, dog breeding, and food businesses. Just make sure you save plenty of time to try Dutch Country Cafe for some true made-from-scratch food. Garnett, KS 66032, USA
- Marysville
Flickr/John Carrel Though it’s a younger Amish community, Marysville is continually growing (and continues to impress its non-Amish neighbors by using 60+-year-old farm equipment.) This is definitely one small town in Kansas you’ll want to add to your bucket list and visit when the weather is warm. Marysville, KS 66508, USA
- Fort Scott
Flickr/Franklin B Thompson Like Marysville, the Amish community near Fort Scott is both newer and smaller than other Kansas communities. If visiting this area, plan a stop at the old military fort to learn a little more about the history of this area. Fort Scott, KS 66701, USA
