Every state has laws. While some of them are currently enforced, many others aren’t and have become forgotten. Lost in the books of time, nestled between their brittle yellow pages never to be thought of again. Unfortunately, the internet came to be and then nothing was ever lost again. With the stroke of a few keys, you can find information on any subject your heart desires. The laws I found were a bit odd, a speck weird, and somewhat hilarious. Listed below are 16 of these weird laws in South Carolina.

  1. It is an offense to get a tattoo.

Ren Buford/Flickr Despite the fact that tattoos are now legal in the state of South Carolina, this law is still on the books.

  1. Horses may not be kept in bathtubs.

Jennifer C./Flickr How on earth did this ever become a law?

  1. Railroad companies may be held liable for scaring horses.

Dawn Ellner/Flickr What I want to know is, how would they be able to stop scaring horses? Also, what were the consequences if they were found to be at fault?

  1. A permit must be obtained to fire a missile.

DVIDSHUB/Flickr This is understandable, but who fired a missile so that this became a law?

  1. A railroad may not remove itself from a town of more than 500 people.

flickr/Reginald McDowell It’s the wording of this one. Have you ever seen railroads with legs?

  1. When approaching a four-way or blind intersection in a non-horse vehicle, you must stop 100 feet from said intersection and discharge a firearm into the air to warn horse traffic.

Steve Jurvetson/Flickr Did anyone think that this might be dangerous?

  1. Every adult must bring a rifle to church on Sundays in order to ward off Indian attacks.

vasse nicolas,antoine/Flickr I wonder if this worked?

  1. Nothing must be sold on Sundays except light bulbs.

Richard Rutter/Flickr This just goes to show you that even when this law was made, many people were addicted to modern conveniences.

  1. You must be at least 18 years old to play pinball.

Florence Ivy/Flickr See! Not all games are for children.

  1. It is illegal to urinate in the waters of any South Carolina park.

flickr/JR P Why? Why would they have to make this a law in the first place?

  1. People may not change clothes in a gas station without permission.

mrehan/Flickr Do they mean inside the gas station or in the bathroom of a gas station?

  1. The fire department may blow up your house.

Pete/Flickr That’s just great! Even if it is to make a fire break, it’s still your house.

  1. Horses are to wear pants at all times.

isamiga76/Flickr I can’t stop laughing at this one. Have you ever seen a horse wear pants?

  1. It is illegal to dance in public in Lancaster, South Carolina.

Vladimir Pustovit/Flickr I’m sure there have been quite a few to break this law. Reminiscent of “Footloose” in a sense.

  1. Eating ripe and juicy watermelon in the Magnolia Street Cemetery is forbidden.

andriuXphoto/Flickr Apparently, if you can’t share, you can’t have it either. And, who chooses to eat watermelon in a cemetery?

  1. It is against the law and a capital offense to inadvertently kill someone while trying to commit suicide.

Erich Stüssi/Flickr I just don’t know what to say about this one except don’t do it.

It is a known fact that South Carolina is not alone in these odd laws that still inhabit the books. I’m wondering, however, if the laws on the books are still punishable, or if some are upheld, would they be honored? We may never know if these illegal things in South Carolina are punishable. What I do know is that these 16 weird laws in South Carolina are pretty incredible.
