Every state has something special to those who live there. From BBQ in North Carolina to Key Lime Pie in Florida, there are some things you just won’t find in other places. Maine is no different. In fact, I have recently decided that the things unique to Maine are actually significantly better than those unique to every other state. Key Lime Pie? I’ve made it and come pretty darn close to the real thing. But, try to find a proper lobster roll outside of Maine? Nope, not possible. Let us dive in to the things that Maine is known for. So here are some things you might be able to locate elsewhere but won’t be the same as what you’ll get in Maine.

  1. The first sunrise in America.

Maurice huang / Flickr Be at the summit of Cadillac Mountain between mid-October and early March and you’ll be greeted by America’s first light.

  1. More than 60 glorious lighthouses.

Bob Travis / Flickr With Maine’s craggy coast, it’s no wonder we need so many ways to guide us safely to harbor. Portland Head Light is said to be the most photographed lighthouse in America!

  1. The 100-mile wilderness.

John Hayes / Flickr Said to be the hardest portion of the entire Appalachian Trail, Maine is home to the 100-mile wilderness. These last arduous miles bring hikers to the Katahdin the northern terminus of the AT. Speaking of which…

  1. Maine is home to the spot where through-hikers complete their AT journey.

  1. Cheap car insurance.

John Ames/ Flickr At around $876 per year, Maine has less than average expense for car insurance premium in the country, according to bankrate.com. If you absolutely hate saving money, move to Michigan where you can pay the highest premium at about $4,003. For perspective, the national average is around $1,265.

  1. The first incorporated city in the United States.

  1. A proper lobster roll.

Red’s Eats / Flickr You can try, but you just won’t find a truly authentic lobster roll any place but Maine. Split top roll with a side of butter, please.

  1. Kids playing out in the door yard.

  1. The only Jersey Shore that is NOT located in New Jersey.

Maine Memes / Facebook Come check out Old Orchard Beach if you’re looking for silly sweatshirts, salt water taffy and Canadians in speedos. And, of course, Pier Fries.

  1. The world’s most medicinal soft drink.

Maine Memes / Facebook Mainers either love it or hate it, but one thing is certain… You won’t find it anywhere but here.

  1. A vanity plate at every street.

What is Maine known for July 14, 2022 Chris Dodge What are some things you can only find in Maine? Maine has some pretty unique and amazing things that make our state great. We have some records that we have broken, and we have some sights not found anywhere else. These are just a few of the things that you will only find in Maine. The flagship store for LL Bean is here. It makes sense that we have this outdoor outfitter but in Freeport, this store is a must-see. The place lights up beautifully around Christmas time, and their pumpkin festival is a must-see for the fall. Not to mention they bring in big artists to play during their free summer concert series. Acadia is our national park and is unlike any other around. Acadia is among the top ten most visited parks annually and for a good reason. Catch the sunrise on top of Cadillac, marvel at Thunder Hole, or spend some time relaxing at Jordan’s Pond. This park is a fantastic way to spend the weekend and it’s right in our very own state. We have the tallest observational bridge in the world. We also have the world’s largest globe, we affectionately call her “Big Eartha”.     What are some things that only happen in Maine? We also have the world’s tallest snowman, We have a whole island known as Hawaii 2, and we have a mustache film festival. All of these insane and true facts are found only here. You can find lobster in other places but not the world’s biggest lobster roll. We also have Katahdin which is a unique and rugged mountain claimed by us as a state. Historically we even have a few inventions that have come from us. Paper plates, gum, and the snowmobile all come from our former citizens. For some food that you will only find here, you will want to look no further than the fluffernutter. Other places in our country don’t even serve fluff in a jar! That’s outrageous.
