Boston has so many attractions and events that you never actually need to leave the city. That being said, the towns and scenery surrounding us are so appealing that you’ll probably be tempted to take some day trips. With so many options, it’s hard to know where to start. That’s why we’ve compiled some of the very best day trips in Massachusetts. From castles to secret gardens, these 11 spots more than justify the journey:
- Royalston
Tripadvisor/ShavikH To truly feel like you’ve gotten away from an urban environment, check out the tiny town of Royalston. Surrounded by gorgeous scenery it offers numerous places to explore wooded hiking trails, admire the town’s waterfalls – yes, plural – or go kayaking. For tranquility and adventure, this is the place to go. Royalston, MA, USA
- Hammond Castle
Facebook/Hammond Castle Museum This Medieval-style castle in Gloucester was once home to a delightfully eccentric inventor who collected all manner of curiosities – including Roman tombstones. His home is no less unique and features a library with a whispering ceiling, a dramatic inner courtyard, and a secret passageway. Hammond Castle, Gloucester, MA 01930, USA
- Fall River
Wikimedia Commons/LEONARDO DASILVA Attractions abound in Fall River, where you can spend a day clambering around historic naval vessels, touring the Lizzie Borden House, and dining on Portuguese food. These are just a few of the unique things to do around Fall River. Fall River, MA, USA
- Garden in the Woods
Tripadvisor/sedum37 Hiding away in Framingham is a whimsical 45-acre garden called Garden in the Woods. It features a beautiful turtle pond, playful sculptures, and wooded pathways just begging to be explored. You could literally spend hours here, it is so peaceful. Garden in the Woods, 180 Hemenway Rd, Framingham, MA 01701, USA
- Salem
Amy the Nurse/Flickr People often associate Salem with October – a month full of crowds and wackiness. However, during the rest of the year, this North Shore town is an ideal destination for anyone interested in mindful living and delectable cuisine. It’s brimming with coastal charm and culture. Salem, MA, USA
- Cohasset
Flickr/Doc Searls Calling all foodies! The beautiful seaside town of Cohasset has far more than its share of scrumptious eateries, including a French patisserie, quaint breakfast joints, and beloved Italian restaurants. Cohasset, MA, USA
- Newburyport
Flickr/Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism Fancy a day of strolling and shopping? Then head to Newburyport, where red brick buildings have been converted into charming stores – many filled with antiques. Once you’ve browsed (or loaded up on loot), walk through the scenic Maudslay State Park, then cap off your visit with a stop at the Newburyport Brewing Company. Newburyport, MA, USA
- Mendon
Sean/Flickr There are many awesome things to do in Mendon. This includes visitng the Southwick Zoo, Quissett Hill Farm, and the Vandervalk Farm & Winery, just to name a few. One of the things the town is also known for is as the home of one of the best restaurants in the state, Alicante Restaurant and Lounge. The menu focuses on fresh, authentic Spanish tapas and Italian dishes peppered with a little bit of Massachussetts flavor and flair. As for the lakefront views? Consider them the icing on a very yummy cake! Mendon, MA, USA
- Nahant
Flickr/Asten Nahant is only a quick trip north of Boston, but with its slow pace of life and long stretches of beach, it feels much farther afield. For a lazy day at the beach, this small town is both convenient and pretty. If you’re searching for “getaway spots near me,” this is definitely one not to be missed. Nahant, MA, USA
- Essex
Tripadvisor/PBD22 Essex offers clams, cruises, and antiques galore – not necessarily in that order. There’s plenty to do in this seemingly sleepy town and the marshy landscape is a surprisingly beautiful bonus. Essex, MA, USA
- World’s End
Flickr/Bill Ilott The end of the world might sound like a long way to go on a day trip but World’s End is really a 251-acre reservation is located in Hingham. Carriage roads designed by Frederick Law Olmsted steer visitors through this green space, across drumlins that afford distant views of Boston’s skyline. World’s End, Hingham, MA 02043, USA

Best day trips in Boston June 29, 2022 Lysa Allman-Baldwin I’m looking for some unique things to do around Boston. There are several cities and states around the country that claim to be “the weirdest,” which to them is a badge of honor. But in Boston, even though it doesn’t have that moniker, it still has some unique things to do. For example, there’s a unique “homemade” shrine called All Saints Way. It’s loaded with artwork, lights, flowers, figurines, and other things all relating to saints. Another bizarre place to visit is The Skinny House. It is said to have been built as the result of a dispute between two brothers back in the mid-1800s. Who knows who won the argument, but the house has remained since that time and is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Are there any day trips around Massachusetts I can take by train? Absolutely, and trains are a great way to explore the state while leaving the car at home. If you want to have an upscale train adventure, it’s definitely worth the hour and 15 minute drive (you have to get to the train, after all) south to Hyannis. That is where you can climb aboard the Cape Cod Dinner train. The luxury here comes in three varieties: First Class, Diamond Class, and Platinum Class. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget. I want to go to a burger restaurant near me. Can you suggest one in the Cambridge area? Some of the best burgers in the Cambridge area can be found at the iconic Mr. Bartley’s Burger Cottage. A Harvard Square landmark for decades, the restaurant draws folks from all over the state for the celebrity and quirky named burgers like the Larry Bird (of course!), a fresh meat patty topped with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and homemade guacamole, and the Megan Thee Stallion, piled high with grilled onions, jalapenos, bacon, and hot sauce, and sprinkled with Cajun spices, just to name a few. There are over 20 options to choose from so don’t worry, you’ll find just what you have a hankering for!
